In Persia, the apricot was called zārdalu — the yellow plum — and it was loved above all stone fruits. It found its way into gardens, cuisine, medicine and poetry, becoming woven into the fabric of Persian life in a way few fruits ever achieve. Poets wrote of its blossom as a symbol of the fleeting nature of beauty. In Arabic, mithl al-mishmish — like an apricot — came to describe something precious, brief, and gone before you have had enough of it. In Syria, the apricot season lasts just two weeks. An entire year of preserves, jams and sweets is made in that fortnight, a culture racing tenderly against the brevity of something it loves.
The apricot arrived as the first celebration of summer, and was gone before summer was ready to begin. That tension between abundance and loss, between the sweetness of the moment and the certainty of its end, is what made it a metaphor for life itself.
In Australia, the apricot found another home. Along the banks of ancient rivers, winding slowly through vast, sun-scorched land, it took root in an environment that demands much and forgives little. The Riverland, the Goulburn Valley, the Murray — these are places of fierce summers and cool winters, where the heat is relentless and the earth is dry. That something so extraordinarily sweet and yielding should thrive here feels like its own quiet miracle. The fruit that ripens briefly, gloriously, and then is gone.
